Come Home Year 2009

Aug 1st - Aug 9th, 2009

MAYOR WAYDE ROWSELLThe town of St. Lawrence continues to be the site of numerous and varied historic first, most recently, it is the site of the first commercial wind farm in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is also the site of the largest known fluorspar deposit in North American, in fact, mining activity has been a strategic economic pillar in the foundation of St. Lawrence previously and will be into the future.

The town's past is a testament to the spirit and tenacity of its citizens. Through its soccer history, economic hardship, occupational disease, tidal wave and war time disaster of Truxton and Pollux, St. Lawrence has exhibited remarkable strength, courage and resilience.

Centuries ago when French and Spanish Basque were engaged in the migratory fishery in Placentia Bay, St. Lawrence was documented as St. Laurens and the Burin Peninsula was known as the Coast of Chapeau Rouge- St. Lawrence is still a vibrant fishing community.

Our ancestral story is narrated by connecting these historic first into one tourism package which will manifest life stories, evidence of incredible feats, epic events in history, geological landscape, natural resources and a culture as keepers of the land and sea that defines our existence as a people.

We are ever mindful that our success depends on the good - well and encouragement of our neighbors and citizens, this respect for others will be our guide as we map our future as a people and community.
