St. Lawrence Laurentians

2008 Soccer National Championships

The best two labels that adequately describe the Town of St. Lawrence are its competitive spirit and quintessence of generosity.  St. Lawrence is a coastal town, located on the southeast corner of the Burin Peninsula in southeastern Newfoundland.

The Burin Peninsula Highway (Route 220) passes through St. Lawrence and joins the Transcanada Highway (Route 1) at Goobies, 185 km to the north. St. Lawrence is connected to all major communities in the area by paved roads that is strategically located 32 kms from international shipping lanes.

St. Lawrence was incorporated as a Town in 1949. It is governed by an elected Town Council operating under government grants and municipal taxes. The Town has a well kept network of paved streets. The Town has been served by an efficient water and sewer system since 1953. Street lighting, snow clearing, garbage collection and general maintenance of the Town is provided by the Town Council For decades this town has been the only producer of fluorspar in Canada and some fifteen years ago it established itself as the soccer capital of the country. Approximately two thousand people live here, with the fish plant now operated by Grand Atlantic Seafoods being the largest employers.

The economic history (mining and fishing) of St. Lawrence and its location to international shipping lanes have supplied the town with available facilities and a proficient industrialized work force past and present capable of handling economic activity.

St. Lawrence Harbor, around which the town is built, is a well protected, ice-free, year round port.  It can accommodate ships of 6m draft. Harbor facilities include a wharf and warehouse and a  fish processing plant which is operated by Grand Atlantic Seafoods, which can facilitate any commercial or industrial activity. There is also a vast acreage of available crown land within 4 km of shipping facilities. This community  is also the site of the largest known fluorspar deposit in North America.  Although the mine is not presently operating, mining infrastructure is still intact.

Sports play a big part in the lives of the people with the community having two regulation size soccer fields as well as a two sheet curling rink, a multipurpose Recreation Center, two tennis courts and also a softball field.  A walk over the hills to Chambers Cove will help you trace the history of the heroism that the residents of St. Lawrence displayed during the disaster of the Truxton and the Pollux that took place Feb 1942 on the shores of St. Lawrence.  Which led to the building of the U.S. Memorial Hospital that was donated by the U.S. in gratitude for the rescue of many men during the dreadful naval disaster .  A visit to the Miner's Museum is a must where detailed photos and materials collected from the disaster are on display.

There are many breath taking attractions around town which make you want to come back again. Take part in the St. Lawrence Day celebrations, catch caplin rolling on the beaches or try squid-jigging in the harbor.
