The U.S. Memorial Health Care Centre is a facility housing both a long term care and protective care unit. This facility also has an ambulatory care clinic operated on a 12-hour basis which is staffed
by full time salaried physicians.
Services offered at this facility include family practice, 24-hour emergency services, long-term care, protective care, nutritional services, nursing, pastoral care, pharmacy, laboratory services, nurse practitioner services, recreation therapy, social work and visiting specialty clinics.
The U.S. Memorial Hospital was donated in 1954 by the United Sates to the people of St. Lawrence and Lawn in gratitude for the heroic effort that they displayed in one of the greatest naval disasters, the wrecking of the Truxton and Pollux.
The people of the United States of America presented this hospital in the desire to express their gratitude for the fortitude and generosity displayed by the heroic people of Newfoundland on that night. It is hoped that this hospital will serve as a living memorial to the 204 Officers and men of the United States Navy who lost their lives in the disaster and as a vital reminder of the inherent courage of mankind.
The first staff of this hospital were: Dr. C.J. Walsh, Medical Officer in charge; Miss Sadie English, R.N., Head Nurse, Beatrice Dixon, R.N., Asst. Nurse; Ward Aides, Florence Handrigan and Leone Loder; cook-Minnie Harnett; Diane Tobin, Julia Slaney and Margaret Edwards, maids.
This facility now serves many of the surrounding communities around the Burin Peninsula. It operates on full time bases providing the best reliable health care possible for St. Lawrence, and other locations on the Burin Peninsula.
The new Burin Peninsula Health Care Center replaced the U.S. Memorial Hospital after it was torn down for safety precautions.
