Grand Atlantic Seafoods

From fish on the line to on-line fish, Grand Atlantic Seafoods is a sophisticated, fast-growing leader in Atlantic Canada's seafood processing industry, and its success extends far beyond the shores of its home in Newfoundland.

Grand Atlantic has several plant locations in the province, including facilities in St. Lawrence, Lawn and Grand Bank. The company was established in 1996 and now processes such species as crab, cod, turbot, scallop and much more.

And don't tell anyone at Grand Atlantic that there are difficulties in Atlantic Canada's seafood industry. The firm is experiencing solid growth in all areas and is aggressively pursuing new opportunities. That approach has led to breakthroughs in major overseas markets, and Grand Atlantic's products are now shipped to customers in Asia, Europe and the United States.

"There is satisfaction that Grand Atlantic was created and made profitable during a very challenging time in a very challenging industry," says Chief Executive Officer Ches Penney. "With the investments made in people and equipment, the company is now positioned to grow and contribute to the economy of the community and the region."

Penney says the company's success starts with Grand Atlantic's devoted staff.

"Clearly our success is attributed to the dedication of our employees, the ability to attract fishers and strong marketing. As well, we continue to examine all opportunities to diversify our operations."

Some of those opportunities have allowed Grand Atlantic to expand its product line from snow crab, the principal species it processes, to a variety of groundfish and, most recently, to market-ready mussels as well.

Grand Atlantic's export success has produced another valuable byproduct: enhancing the company's importance to the local community. In fact, the company has had a major positive impact in the St. Lawrence area, especially when it comes to job creation.

"I trust at least that Grand Atlantic's continuing operation has served as a stabilizing force, provided jobs and offered some security and hope where many would say the prospects were otherwise limited," Ches Penney adds proudly.

Innovative new product development is the mainstay of Grand Atlantic's future growth plans, both in existing and in still untapped markets. E-commerce is also a major marketing tool, and one day soon the company hopes to be hooking customers on-line.
