ST. JOHN'S  -  Heavy rains are creating trouble on the Burin Peninsula, with flooding already causing serious damage and the forecast calling
for yet more rain.

In St. Lawrence, basements have flooded, driveways have been destroyed and roads have become impassable.

As well, the shoulders of some roads have washed away.

"I haven't seen rain, as much rain, for the last 10, 15 years - nothing like this," says St. Lawrence Mayor Wade Rowsell.

Rain started falling Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday, with 80 millimetres coming down in just a day.

In some areas of the regional highway, water has pooled to depths of about 50 centimetres.

A nasty early spring storm has unleashed plenty of wet snow and rain - and often both - across the island portion of the province.

From March 29: EMO issues heads-up over possible flooding:

Several regions have had simultaneous warnings for heavy snowfall and heavy rainfall.

On the west coast, the storm hit late and with less impact than had been expected.

As much as 120 millimetres may fall on parts of the south coast and the Avalon Peninsula over the course of the storm, which is expected to
continue into Thursday.

The area may also be hit by winds gusting up to 100 kilometres per hour.
