A TOWN FULL OF CARING
Article from The Chattanooga Times in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
A woman named Diane Ritchie who works
for the Chattanooga Times Free Press in Chattanooga, Tennessee
was seeking information and photos of St. Lawrence for an
article that she wanted to publish. One of her
responsibilities with the Chattanooga Times is producing a
tabloid about character of education which is distributed to
all of their school children. (Approx. 45,000 students, K-12).
December's character trait was "Caring".
In the tabloid they chosen to do a story about Lanier
Phillips and the care he received from the St.
Lawrence community during The Disaster of The Truxton and The
Pollux in February 1942.
She heard the story about the
disaster of the Truxton and Pollux on NPR Radio a few months
ago and was taken by it. She thought the generosity of St.
Lawrence shaped Mr. Phillip's future so positively. She added
it will be a great character teaching tool for their students.
She found this web site about St.
Lawrence and wanted to use some info and she was seeking a
photo of Mr. Phillips also. I sent her the photo that it is
enclosed in the preceding article. She was impressed by our
hometown and the generosity and hospitality that St. Lawrence
displayed during this dreadful disaster.
