St. Lawrence Masters’ team used penalty shots to edge
Quebec 2-1 for the Eastern Canadian Masters men’s soccer
gold medal in a tournament played in Prince Edward Island.
The clubs went to penalty shots, after regulation and
overtime, when Paul Slaney’s goal had the score 1-1.
Slaney, Albert Anstey, Harry Kelly and Jeff Appleby scored
the St. Lawrence penalty shots.
St. Lawrence eliminated defending champions P.E.I. Sunday
in a game that also required penalty shots to settle. It
was a scoreless tie after regulation and overtime. Paul
Slaney, Jeff Appleby and Phil Molloy scored penalty shots
for St. Lawrence and keeper Keith Jackman made three
penalty shot saves.
St. Lawrence had opened its championships with a 3-1
victory over New Brunswick. Phil Molloy scored twice for
the winners while Eddy Kelly added the other goal.
CHALLENGE CUP
Clinton Edwards played a major role in a seventh place
finish for St. Lawrence in the 2006 National Men’s
Challenge Cup soccer championships in Surrey, British
Columbia.
St. Lawrence had a scoreless tie with British Columbia in
the seeding playoffs, after regulation and overtime, and
the clubs went to penalty shots. Edwards was in goal for
the shots since regular keeper John Douglas had been
red-carded.
Not only did Edwards stop two B.C. penalty shots, but he
scored one of the four St. Lawrence penalty-shot goals.
Ryan Slaney, Rudy Norman and Blair Alyward added other
penalty-shot goals to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 win.
The other British Columbia entry
scored one minute into overtime to edge St. Lawrence 2-1
Sunday. Adam Loder scored for St. Lawrence after 22
minutes and B.C. tied it at 75 minutes to force the
overtime.
15-year-old Sean
Edwards helped the Laurentians to its win over British
Columbia and is believed to be the youngest player to
compete at the National senior men’s championship.
Also in Surrey, Paradise Physiotherapy defeated the Yukon
4-1 to finish eleventh. Susan Myrden and Raeleen Baggs had
one goal each as the Yukon had two ‘own goals’. Sunday
Ontario blanked Paradise Physiotherapy 5-0. |
