Sea-Hawks off to AUS Championships
Edwards named

Memorial University’s
Men’s Soccer team, seated in sixth place, headed to
Fredericton, New Brunswick last weekend for the AUS
Championships. The University of New Brunswick Varsity
Reds hosted the finals.
The Sea-Hawks took on the third seeded UNB Thursday and
dropped a 1-0 decision to fall out of contention.
Semi-final games were set for Saturday.
Striker and team Co-Captain
Clinton Edwards has been named an AUS First Team
All-Stars. For the third year in a row, Edwards has made
the list contributing four goals to the Hawks’ total this
season. Named Memorial’s Male Athlete of the Week once
this season and Player of the Game on two occasions,
Edwards has remained a threat in the Hawks’ line-up
despite playing through injury all-season.
Co-Captain and Fullback Jon Kelly was also named as an AUS
First Team All-Star. Contributing three goals in regular
season play, fifth-year Kelly was named a first team
All-Star in 2005 and a second team All-Star in 2004.
Head Coach Scott Betts
described Kelly as "the most consistent player" he has
ever coached, Kelly ended his CIS career this season on a
high note.
Finishing the season with a 5-4-4 record, the team
suffered a few injuries at the tail of the season but
following a two game sweep over the St. Francis Xavier
X-Men at home the final weekend of regular play, the
team’s starting line-up was looking to some tough
competition this past weekend.
The men’s side routed St. FX X-Men 3-0 and 2-0 in less
than ideal playing conditions in the last game, allowing
the Hawks to advance to the AUS Championships.
The Hawks have a number of experienced players at all
positions which, coupled with the pure determination of
many of Memorial’s players, should be a combination for
success.
Offensively, Clinton Edwards and fifth-year Steve Croft
lead the squad with four goals each. In the midfield,
Jeremy Babstock has remained a powerhouse on the field
approaching each game as a ‘battle’ as Coach Scott Betts
has remarked. His tremendous work rate has spread
throughout the team as the Hawks appear as a greater
threat with every game.
With the injuries plaguing the team, numerous rookies had
to step forward to fill some big roles, a tough task at
the best of times, however, the team does not appear to be
suffering. St. John’s natives Chris White, Zach Wade and
Chris Bulger have all held their own this season, each
receiving ‘Player of the Game’ honors which has been an
asset to the team this season. |
